Simple and Natural Ways to get to Sleep!!
Life is difficult enough for many people out there, but when you can’t get enough sleep, you can’t think straight. You toss and you turn all night, and you just can’t get to sleep. You have the start of a full day in the morning, and you need to try and get some sleep to recuperate after the busy day that you had just had.
If you don’t get enough sleep, you will eventually crash. If you crash, not only your body but your family will suffer. Learning to control what you can and allowing yourself to put down what can wait, is a way to the huge load taken off of your shoulders.
There are always going to be things that need to be done; however, you need daylight and working hours to get the majority if not all of them done.
Yet, you still find yourself tossing and turning unable to get Mr. Sandman to take you into a deep slumber. You eventually find yourself yelling for your mind to shut-up and just allow you to sleep.
None of these things help in the end. Then the alarm for your wakeup call soon makes itself known. Then you will be off to start your very packed schedule, with little to no sleep.
Like the many sleepless people out there, I have tried Melatonin and Tart Cranberry Juice to get to sleep. However, I have found that these things didn’t do much to help me sleep. They are still good ideas for those that are able to use them to sleep but for those that need something a little more, things are different.
The following are some different steps that I have found to help me to get some sleep.
When I find my mind restless in the middle of the night, I had a bad habit of looking at the time. I would look at my clock, and say to myself,
“Darn! I only have Three Hours left?”
or
“Man, I have Twenty Minutes until I need to get up!”
Like you I have tried many things that didn’t help. In the end it was Yoga that helped me clear my mind of distractions along with the strangest accident.
The accident happened when the time on my alarm clock changed unexpectedly to a different time when my power bleeped off and on.
However, when my clock changed, it made it easier to accept the time that was displayed. Since it was not the ‘True Time’, and the new time had changed to an hour before the actual time. So, instead of it being 6 AM it was in fact 5 AM. Seeing this made it was easier to get back to sleep, since I knew that I had more time.
If you don’t want to change the time on your clocks, then you can either move it out of your immediate line of sight or try avoiding it all together. If you need to get up for anything in the middle of the night, try to keep your eyes down and don’t look at any of the clocks you may have around the house. Out of Sight Out of Mind so to speak.
When you wake up in the middle of the night, it would be better to go to the bathroom and maybe grab some water. This keeps you from thinking about how long until your bladder needs to be emptied, and a cool glass of water can do much more for you than you think.
Please be careful moving around your home though. Make sure that you know where you are going. You don’t need to wake up the whole house by breaking your baby toe on the corner of the wall.
Now, the issues with your mind racing is something that we all need to deal with at some point. I have found that it is easier to clear my mind. This is a problem when it comes to most if not all who are so busy during the day.
However, it is also not something that I learned in one night. It takes time and practice to really let go of everything.
Clearing your mind is something that many have had issues with when you are lying in bed and trying to get to sleep. Things just keep running through your mind like,
‘I need to pay bills.’
‘I need to make sure that my kids have lunch money in the morning.’
‘I need to clean the house again.’
‘I need to have their school projects done by Friday.’
By basically telling myself, “Okay. It is __ o’clock now. I need to sleep in order to get through the day. There is nothing that I can do about the bills until payday, ___ days from now. I need to wake up at __o’clock, and today has been tiring. What needs to be done tomorrow, needs to wait until tomorrow, when I am able to get things done.”
These two practices were something that I had stumbled upon by chance.
Do they always work? NO.
Do they help me get to sleep the majority of the time? YES.
I am not saying that your sleep will always be perfect because like life, it is only as perfect as life wants to make it. The unforeseeable things will always make themselves known when you least expect it.
Your children may have a nightmare, a toothache, or just want a glass of water, thus ruining all of your hard work to get to sleep. Then you need to start all over again from step one.
However, starting from step one is going to be easier since you have already accomplished your goal of getting to sleep in the first place.
This means that the second go around is easier. Since you have already gotten to sleep before you will know how to do it this time and it will be easier.
When you wake up in the middle of the night, try to stretch and avoid looking at the clock. Don’t look at anything with the time displayed on it. Adjust your clothes, pillows, and blanket before trying to go back to sleep. Something may cause pain or discomfort somewhere after laying there for a while, and making the adjustments now will make things easier later.
So, the steps for getting to sleep are as follows:
- Clear your mind. Since you can’t do anything about it at the moment then there is no reason to worry about it now.
- If you do get up for any reason, try not to look at anything that has the time displayed.
- Make sure that your bathroom needs are taken care of. So, you don’t need to worry about when you will need to go. Or you need to go just as you are about to drift off.
- Make sure your clothes and bedding are adjusted to where you are comfortable. You don’t want to be kept awake because your clothes are bunched up causing pain.
- Have a drink by your bed so that you can refresh yourself before dozing off into a peaceful sleep.
I hope that these suggestions will help you get some sleep tonight. I wish you sweet dreams and a few more hours sleep.
